“The Plastic Age” – A world free from moth and rust and full of colour?

70 years ago, Yarsley and Couzens in their book Plastics predicted that The Plastic Age would make the world “brighter and cleaner” and “free from moth and rust and full of colour”. In many ways it has fulfilled that promise. It’s hard to imagine a world without plastic.

Our houses, the objects that we carry round every day, even our clothes are largely made with plastic. Most of us don’t even give it a thought. It’s part of a world of plenty, one of the benefits of technology and cheap oil. We can’t identify the plastics we use, and know even less about the fillers, plasticizers, stabilisers, and colourings added to plastics to enhance their properties.

There is increasing concern about the food we eat but much less about the health impacts of packaging, the leakage of phthalates and bisphenol A. Plastic debris litters our streets, our shores, the oceans, and accumulates in landfill. No-one really knows how much there is, or the extent of the environmental hazard it represents.

Are the deaths of wildlife due to ingestion, or fouling and the possible contamination of the food chain just the price we have to pay for the convenience of plastic? We try to use less but plastics production increases every year using. Some plastics get recycled, but with so many types and little thought given to designing in recyclability, it’s  expensive and often results in degraded materials. Plastic packaging is the poster boy of our throwaway society.

What are the solutions?

Find out at Emerge’s public meeting on “The Future of Plastic Packaging” on Nov 24th at 5.45pm at Brazenose House, Brazenose St, M2 5BP

Richard Thompson, Professor of Marine Biology will be talking about the broad picture, the impact of plastic packaging, the environmental and health impacts, the overall trajectory of plastic packaging across the world and how the UK fits into that, and the priorities for change.

Stuart Foster, Director of RECOUP, will be talking about the different properties/characteristics of plastics, new developments in plastics and progress in the UK and Europe.

Nick Cliffe, Marketing Manager at Closed Loop Recycling, will be talking about the challenges of sorting packaging, and how smart packaging could make this easier.

Iain Ferguson, Environment Manager at The Co-operative Food, will be talking about the journey taken by the Co-op in reducing packaging, where it’s come from, where it’s going, the obstacles and what needs to change to make it possible for the Coop to move forward.

5 ways to reuse yoghurt pots

Having been inspired by one of our fantastic Zero Waste Champions, Nigel, I have decided to share a few tips on what to do with those hard-to-recycle yoghurt pots.

  1. Flower pots. Quick and easy, a great way to separate out young plants until they are ready to be moved to bigger things. Make sure you put a few holes in the bottom though!
  2. Paint pots Now, I always remember as a kid having those days where my sister and I took over the dining table with all sorts of paints, crayons and other crafting things. We always needed something to decant the paint into something and a yoghurt pots were always available.
  3. Screw, nails, etc storer If your a big DIY fan you can store any random screws in yoghurt pots. You can write on the pot and keep them on a shelf for future use- you never know when you might need them.
  4. Candle Moulds Saw this one on another site- the small yoghurt pots are great for moulding candles in apparently! Just make sure they are heat-resistant.
  5. Piggy Banks The bigger pots with the sturdier lids can be used by all ages as a great money saving box. Just cut a hole in the top and throw your pennies in!
So, I hope that helps!!
Good luck Nigel!

Can The iPhone Help You Reduce Waste? Yes It Can!

As we know councils are pulling out all the stops now when it comes to waste reduction.

For example the waste disposal authority have funded a number of community groups to facilitate them in spreading the word about waste. As it happens I helped out the Monton group with some speed stuffing of recycling leaflets in bags last Friday as part of this initiative.
The latest news is that Recycle for Greater Manchester (R4GM) has turned to technology to help them with the war on waste. That’s right, R4GM has hired an ecommerce company from Sale to create an Iphone app to help the good people of Greater Manchester find their nearest HWRC, bike re-use schemes and how to reduce junk mail, food waste and packaging.
This is a marvelous idea. I have been on numerous waste reduction campaigns where leaflets were used (see first paragraph) and if this can be reduced all the better.
I see that the app has already received a 5* review from Vizzzzz who claims it is a useful app – nice work Vizzzzz, hopefully that will encourage more people to download it!
I would be really interested to download the app…. but I have an Android phone – I wonder if they will do an Android version?
If you download it please let us know what you think of it in the comments – I’m dying to know!
Take care,
Joe

Cardiff Considering Anaerobic Digestion

Some goods news for Welsh recyclers, it looks like Cardiff Council are giving very serious consideration to the installation of a new Anaerobic digestion facility. This move could see 50,000 tonnes of waste diverted from their landfill stream, where previously it had been transported to Gloucester for landfill disposal.

It’s always great to hear positive news like this and we just want to wish our neighbours the best of luck in getting this new facility up and running!

Panorama – E-Waste (Track My Trash)

There was a really great programme on Panorama last night, it covered the dubious practices of the unlicensed WEEE waste sector. The Environment Agency tracked TV sets they see where they ended up. In come cases they got as far as Africa where they were dumped and scavenged by children.

This kind of practice is absolutely abhorrant and it’s good to see the Environment Agency taking steps to make sure people are aware of what can happen to WEEE waste that is not treated correctly.

I highly recommend you watch the programme and see why it’s important to work with licensed waste contractors for your WEEE waste.

England’s Recycling Rates Increase!

Great news all around, I’ve just read a report that indicates that England’s recycling rates have grown to 40.3% of all household waste. This is really good news as it shows year on year progression and growth since 2007!

(09/10 – 40.1%, 08/09 – 39.7%, 07/08 – 38.8%)

We’d like to offer our thanks to everyone who is working so hard spreading the word about sustainability and recycling. Not only are we recycling more in England but we’re also producing less waste, last year the total weight of household waste fell by 200,000 tonnes in England.

Let’s stick at it, redouble our efforts and we’ll get there eventually! :)

Axe for weekly black bin collections in Manchester to save £12m | Manchester Evening News – menmedia.co.uk

Greetings,

Another bit of interesting topical news for our Manchester readers, with effect from early July general waste collections will be moving to fortnightly across Manchester.

Apparently this will save the City Council £12m in landfill taxes, but hopefully this won’t also be detrimental to the environment of Manchester in the form of increased levels of fly-tipping.
